SJSU Refund for Student's Mandatory and Activity Fees

SJSU Refund for Student's Mandatory and Activity Fees
The Issue
Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) San Jose State University announced the closure of school campus during the Fall 2020 semester and remained closed Spring 2021. Students were sent an email that due to California and Santa Clara county mandated closures academic learning would continue online. This includes the closure of SJSU's recreation center, the cancellation of student activities in person, and all other campus facilities that remained closed and not used by students nor faculty throughout the semester. Despite these campus facilities being closed, students were still paying full tuition and fees, including international students who had to return home. Students had no access to these facilities, which they should not have been charged for.
Online learning has made it difficult for students to process their learning material that they would have understood hands on. Tuition and fees shoud not have remained the same when students have converted to academic learning online giving them a lack of resources and support they would have recieved on campus. The outbreak of the coronavirus has also caused job loss for students including those who worked on campus to pay for their students tuition and fees. This outbreak has caused a major financial disadvantage for students making it difficult to obtain and pay for everyday expenses, academic materials, and tuition fees. Students were advised that other activities and programs would also be converted online although these activities didn’t cost the same as they would in person since there is not physical material and should of been subtracted from student fees. Therefore, students are requesting to be reimbursed for fees and services they were charged for and had no access to due to campus facility closures.
These fees alone without the cost of classes amount to over $2,000. Many students and families have already struggled to pay for college education before the pandemic began. Refunding students for these fees will help with students and families financial stress and help pay for their other academic expenses. We want to continue attending SJSU paying for facilities we can use.
Please sign and share this petition to demand refunds for students for the resources students did not recieve during the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semester and remaining of campus closure.
