Hazard Pay for Exposed and Essential Employees of CSL Plasma
The Issue
As of 11/16/2020:
Corporate management of CSL Plasma has not communicated a plan to compensate employees for working in hazardous conditions under the threat of COVID-19. This is important as we face the possibility of medical bills associated with diagnosing or treating sickness. Many of our employees are especially at risk as aged 55+ and/or with underlying conditions, and many are already in quarantine with no guarantee of income, especially as part-time employees receive no PTO benefits and full-time employees may not have enough PTO to cover time away.
Additionally, face masks have not been openly provided to all staff, who make physical contact to interact with hundreds of plasma donors every day, testing vitals and performing phlebotomy. Our regular Personal Protective Equipment is in place, and donors are screened; however, research has shown that asymptomatic people can be transmitters of COVID-19. A mask is particularly important for employees screening those entering the building.
Paid leave for quarantining employees, hazard pay and masks for working employees; these are basic measures that other companies have guaranteed to their workers, mostly based on World Health Organization recommendations. Our co-workers are risking their health and livelihood to help develop life-saving medications; they deserve protection and security.
