Crown Act 2024

The Issue

The CROWN Act, which stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” is a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles including braids, locs, twists or bantu knots

It is important to realize that this effects all minorities and it is our job to make sure we do all that we can to ensure this act is passed.

Here are some reasons why this act being passed is so important:

  • It ensures that black and brown people are respected and protects in professional spaces

  • Addresses systemic racism that exists in spaces where people may feel unwelcome

  • Black and brown women have faced many hardships and challenges based on their appearance

  • Actively accepting these features will help promote self love and unity amongst women

  • Being at a pwi, it is important to be comfortable in classrooms as everyone may not look like you. Hair is a part of an image and allows freedom to express yourself. It helps individuals be comfortable and open
  • Ideally this could make it a long term issue of not feeling welcomed based solely on how one’s hair looks
  • Promotes self love/ loving natural hair in professional spaces

We can make change! Your voices matter! By signing this petition we can raise more awareness for the Crown Act and try to get it passed! All it takes is one sign to make a difference!
