Highland residents who live on and around Tillson Ave have long enjoyed being within easy walking distance of the rail trail, which is one of the neighborhood’s greatest assets. As traffic has increased, however, safely reaching Linwood Ave (the rail trail access point and the only location with a sidewalk on Tillson Ave) has become more difficult. To address this, a group of residents is petitioning the Town of Lloyd to install a crosswalk on Tillson Ave, creating a safe connection between Smith Terrace and Linwood Ave.

Here's why we think it's important. Adding a crosswalk over Tillson Ave would be a simple change with big benefits for our whole community. It would create a safe, welcoming connection to the rail trail and the sidewalk, especially important since the sidewalk is only on one side of Tillson today. This is also where high-schoolers get on the bus, which means any student from Smith Terrace, Abbey Lane, or the other side of Tillson Avenue has to cross the street to access the bus. This is a serious safety issue.

A clearly marked crossing would help slow traffic, make drivers more aware of people on foot, and give everyone greater peace of mind. Most importantly, it would make it easier for neighbors of all ages to walk, explore, and enjoy the area together, while giving our kids a safer path to grow their independence.
