No to Hopkinton CVS

The Issue

By signing this petition, we hope to persuade Crosspoint Associates, Inc. to hault their contract with CVS and to redirect it to another business venture, such as a small grocery store or another option that the town of Hopkinton actually needs, desires, and will ultimately promote.

This is in response to a press release from June 3rd on HopNews.com stating that Hopkinton’s Planning Department has confirmed Crosspoint Associates will be leasing the former Collela’s property at 61 Main Street, Hopkinton, MA, to CVS. Many citizens of the Town of Hopkinton, MA are gravely concerned about the economic development of the property formerly home to Collela’s, a family‐owned grocery store. This parcel, the southwest corner of the intersection between Grove Street (Hwy 85) and Main Street (Hwy 135), is situated at the very hub of our community and, as a town, we are extremely invested in its redevelopment. It has come to our attention that Cross Point Associates is planning on or already has leased this location to CVS, meanwhile there are three other CVS stores less than 10 miles away in Westborough, Ashland and Milford. This location is also directly across from Hopkinton Drug, a business very closely tied to town fundraising, annual events, and is one of the few compounding pharmacies left in the state. There is also lingering and hostile tension between Hopkinton residents and CVS due to the following lawsuit involving Hopkinton Drug and CVS:

Hopkinton has enjoyed a thriving, desirable town center for 300 years and, after so long, is it really wise to allow a CVS [Consumer Value Store] to become the face of Hopkinton? Should this be the first thing people see when entering our town in our most prominent location? I would prefer that the Crosspoint associates explore alternative, more welcome, development options, such as small scale grocer or mix‐used of retail and business to help restore the village atmosphere of this significant location.

All of Hopkinton would agree that if developed properly, this project will be a significant boom to the area and a good investment for Crosspoint Associates. We appreciate your efforts to keep residents informed of redevelopment plans; however, we would like to express our profound disappointment and dissatisfaction with this solution. It is unacceptable.

Crosspoint Associates, Inc, Please reconsider this decision and know that there is a strong movement in Hopkinton against the development of this corner into a CVS.
