Criminalise Public Harassment like Catcalling and Allow Prosecution for Perpetrators

Criminalise Public Harassment like Catcalling and Allow Prosecution for Perpetrators
The Issue
As a woman who has personally faced numerous instances of public harassment, I know firsthand the fear and discomfort that such actions can invoke. I am far from alone in this experience. Such incidents, which include catcalling, are common experiences for many of us, and they represent a fundamental violation of our personal space and respect. We must not normalise these harmful behaviours.
Harassment on the streets is not just an inconvenience, it is a serious concern for personal security. A survey conducted by UN women UK in 2021 found that 71% of women in the UK have experienced some form of sexual harassment in public, with the figure rising to 86% in women aged 18-24 (UN Women UK, 2021). It's time to recognise this not only as a societal problem but as a legal matter.
We call upon lawmakers to acknowledge this pervasive issue by making public harassment a criminal offence, where the perpetrators can be held accountable and prosecuted. By doing so, we can create safe public spaces that respect and uphold everyone's right to move freely without fear. Join us in this cause and sign our petition today. It's time to make our voices heard against public harassment.
