We, members of the Herkimer County community, have serious concerns about current practices at the Herkimer County Humane Society. Sources within the community have provided evidence that suggests ongoing illegal activities, including failure to follow established protocols, stealing and hiding legally owned dogs (by staff and board) and unjustly withholding pets from their rightful owners. Such disregard for the law and for the rights of pet owners is completely unacceptable in a society supposed to provide refuge and care for animals.

Furthermore, we are deeply disturbed by the termination of the cruelty investigator, a vital role that ensures the well-being of the animals under the Society's care, and brings potential mistreatment situations to the court. His inexplicable dismissal only raises further fears about the conduct and intentions of the current board and staff.

We believe that it's essential for the Humane Society to reflect the community it serves, to adhere to the law and to respect the rights of pet owners. Therefore, we call for immediate, comprehensive changes. This includes the reinstatement of the cruelty investigator and the implementation of a new, transparent, ethically-driven board. This current board needs to resign.
