Why this petition matters

In an effort to recognize the tireless contributions Scoutmasters provide to our youth, and to the Scouting movement at large, and to keep quality volunteers accessible and active, I am recommending the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America create a position of Scoutmaster Emeritus.
Possible list of qualifications and job description is below:

The Scoutmaster Emeritus is a registered Scouter who has previously served as Scoutmaster of a Troop for a period of 10 consecutive years and wishes to continue giving back to Scouting. Duties will largely mirror those of a Unit Scouter Reserve (position code 92U).
Requirements for Scoutmaster Emeritus include:
- Served as the Scoutmaster of any Scouts BSA Troop for 10 consecutive years.
- Maintain current Youth Protection Training (YPT).
- Maintain your current contact information with the Troop Committee Chair of your most recent Scouts BSA Troop, or of the Troop of your choice if living more than 50 miles away from your most recent Troop.

The Scoutmaster Emeritus duties include:
General
• Serve as a mentor for a current Scoutmaster or ASM if requested.
• Work with other responsible adults to bring Scouting to the youth.
• Use the methods of Scouting to achieve the aims of Scouting.
Meetings
• At the request of the Scoutmaster, attend Troop meetings, weekend camps, or resident camps.
• Attend Roundtable sessions to stay apprised of trends in the Scouting movement, and to maintain relationships with other Scouters for the benefit of the youth we serve.
Activities
• Participate in council and district events.
• Help to build a strong program by using proven methods presented in Scouting literature.
• Conduct all activities under qualified leadership, safe conditions, and the policies of the chartered organization and the Boy Scouts of America.
