Creating a unique memorial to the Sycamore Gap Tree

Creating a unique memorial to the Sycamore Gap Tree

The Issue

I recently wrote to Northumberland National Park with this suggestion for a memorial to this historic tree, rather than chopping it up and making souvenirs or plaques or similar to raise funds.

If you like it, then please add your name, and with enough signatures maybe they will actually consider it ---

"Greetings,

I realise that you must all be overwhelmed presently with the furore over the appalling vandalism of the beloved Sycamore Gap  Tree, that has saddened people the world over.

May I suggest a way to memorialise this iconic Northumberland emblem ?

Firstly, I would think that crowdfunding any project would not be at all difficult given the huge public interest that it has drawn.

So it seems that apparently the chances of the stump regenerating is high, which is fantastic if this happens, so now please imagine for a moment that the severed crown of the tree is fully and expertly metalized with copper or bronze, so obviously the tree itself is now preserved completely and with all of its familiar details intact.

Then, if you visualize this 'sculpture' being sighted close by the stump of the Sycamore Gap Tree stump and in line of it, so that when looking at the gap directly ( say from the angle that your photo of it here is ), it will appear to rise from the stump and even occupy the same space that it once did, and thus create the same silhouette that it always has.

And so it will be the actual crown of the tree itself, albeit now encased in a beautiful metal covering, whilst the living part regenerates nearby.

I hope this suggestion is given some consideration, as I believe it would make a stunning and majestic monument to this cherished tree."
