The Issue

Millions of South Africans are struggling to afford basic necessities like food and essential goods due to low SASSA grants and high prices. Many rely on these grants to survive, facing challenges in accessing food, healthcare, and other critical needs.

My name is Noluthando Pearl Nekhongoni and I'm a student at a higher institution receiving a social grant to care for my little sister, niece, and baby. The grant is barely enough to cover our basic needs, and it's getting harder to afford daily necessities like bread, maize meal, and oil for cooking. Clothes are a luxury we can't afford.

I'm also struggling with the reality of completing internships with no prospect of permanent employment. It's demotivating to see external candidates being hired instead of giving opportunities to those who have already gained experience and skills through internships.

Did you know?

- As of April 2025, SASSA grants have increased, but it's still not enough to cover the rising costs of living.

- The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant has been extended until March 2026, with a monthly payment of R370.

- South Africa's unemployment rate has surged to 32.5%, with over 50% of the population living below the poverty line.

We need change. We need the government to prioritize affordable access to basic necessities like food, healthcare, and education. We need fair opportunities for employment and skills development.

Let's work together to create a more equitable society. Sign this petition to demand action from our government!
