The Issue

*Petition for the Establishment of a Native American Studies Program at the University of Rhode Island*

 

*Mission Statement:*
We propose the establishment of a Native American Studies program at the University of Rhode Island, dedicated to promoting cultural understanding, historical accuracy, and social justice for Native American communities.

*Rationale:*

1. Cultural significance: Native American communities have made significant contributions to Rhode Island's history and identity.
2. Historical injustices: The state's indigenous peoples have faced centuries of colonization, displacement, and marginalization.
3. Community demand: The Narragansett Indian Tribe and other Native American organizations have expressed a need for culturally relevant education.
4. Academic relevance: Native American Studies aligns with URI's strategic plan, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

*Program Objectives:*

1. Provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Native American histories, cultures, and experiences.
2. Foster critical thinking, cultural competency, and community engagement.
3. Prepare graduates for careers in fields like tribal administration, cultural resource management, and social justice.

*Proposed Curriculum:*

1. Core courses: Introduction to Native American Studies, Narragansett and Eastern Niantic History and Culture, Indigenous Rights and Policy, Native American Literature and Arts.
2. Electives: Native American Spirituality and Philosophy, Tribal Governance and Leadership, Native American Women's Studies.
3. Pre-colonial and pre-contact tribal life courses.
4. Interdisciplinary courses: Archaeology of Pre-Contact Tribal Life, Anthropology of Tribal Cultures.

*Community Engagement:*

1. Internships with Native American organizations.
2. Service-learning projects with the Narragansett Indian Tribe.
3. Guest lectures and workshops with Native American scholars and community members.

*Faculty and Resources:*

1. Tenure-track faculty with expertise in Native American Studies.
2. Adjunct faculty from Native American communities.
3. Library collections and digital archives.
4. Cultural center and museum partnerships.

*Implementation Plan:*

1. Establish an advisory board comprising Native American community members, faculty, and students.
2. Develop and approve program curriculum.
3. Hire faculty and staff.
4. Launch program marketing and recruitment.
