Create laws to curb political violence
The Issue
Growing up, I was taught that a foundation of democracy is the ability to openly express one's beliefs and engage in civil discourse. Unfortunately, that foundation is being threatened by a dangerous rise in political violence in the United States. I am now afraid to voice my political party affiliation or share my beliefs in public, fearing the repercussions of intimidation and even violence. This environment of fear is not just personal to me but affects our broader community as well.
PBS News Hour has reported a worrying increase in political violence across the U.S., with several incidents going unnoticed and unaccounted for. Notably, during the 2024 election cycle, nearly half of the states reported threats against election workers, including death threats and doxing through social media channels. Such activities are not only unlawful, but also serve as a barrier to the democratic process, deterring good citizens from serving as election workers and diminishing the integrity of our elections.
Media organizations play a critical role in shaping public perception and, at times, inadvertently contribute to the rise in political violence. Sensationalist reporting and biased news coverage can ignite tensions and fuel division within our communities. This underscores the pressing need for responsible journalism that values facts and supports democratic engagement, rather than one that incites or condones violent behaviors.
Therefore, we must compel our lawmakers to act decisively by creating and enforcing laws that deter political violence. This involves not only the enactment of comprehensive legislation but also increasing resources for enforcement and protection agencies. By doing so, we can safeguard our election workers and ensure that individuals are free to express their political views without fear.
Our communities thrive on diversity of thought and opinion, and the only way to preserve this richness is to combat the menace of political violence aggressively. I urge you to consider the profound impact this issue has on each of us and the importance of living in a society where everyone feels safe to participate in the democratic process. Please join me in calling for laws to be enacted against political violence.
