Create Green Space in Footscray – Urge Government to Buy Little Saigon Market site
The issue
My family & I live in Footscray and we have witnessed the negative effects derelict sites such as the former Little Saigon Market site (63-67 Nicholson Street) have on Footscray's central business district (CBD). A once vibrant and bustling market has sat vacant for over a decade - a glaring symbol of the deterioration and lack of investment in our community.
Footscray already has one of the lowest ratios of green space per capita in Victoria, and with the Victorian Housing Statement expected to drive a population increase of around 50,000 residents, the need for open space has never been greater. Compared to our neighbouring municipalities (Brimbank 85sqm, Hobson's Bay 120sqm), Footscray lags significantly behind with just 40sqm per capita, projected to shrink further without intervention (to 15sqm).
The 5110sqm site at 63-67 Nicholson Street has been repeatedly land banked by developers since it burnt down in 2016. It's now listed for sale by expression of interest. This presents a rare opportunity for the Victorian State Government (& Federal Government) to step in and support Maribyrnong City Council in securing it for community use. The asking price (assumed to be $10 million) is a relatively modest investment, especially considering the council's recent spending on civic office renovations ($40M) & other large state government infrastructure projects ($1.5B Footscray Hospital). After being landbanked for a decade, the site is now for sale under the instructions of Cor Cordis, an insolvency firm, and will likely sell quickly.
A well-designed, activated public park in the Footscray CBD would bring immense health benefits, providing much-needed space for informal recreation, social connection, and community events while also contributing to a safer and more vibrant Footscray. At present, neglected and vacant lots encourage antisocial behaviour, whereas well-lit, well-maintained parks with regular programming can help attract families, workers, and visitors to the area.
Given the State Government’s role in driving Footscray’s population growth, we strongly believe it should take the lead in funding this initiative. This is a unique chance to invest in Footscray’s future and ensure it remains a liveable, welcoming, and thriving community for generations to come.
We call on the Maribyrnong City Council, State & Federal Governments to purchase the site of the former Little Saigon Market and transform it into a public green area. It is time we rejuvenate Footscray and provide its residents with the amenities they rightfully deserve. Please sign this petition and support our cause for a greener, healthier Footscray.
