I have been involved with fostering and adopting from animal shelters in Southern California, including those in San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, and Orange Counties, for many years. Over the years, I've  witnessed firsthand the dire circumstances many animals face. Every week, I receive heart-wrenching networking posts regarding animals  from the Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino County. These posts often list dogs deemed for euthanasia, many of whom are young, vibrant, and full of potential for love and companionship. It breaks my heart to see that factors like overcrowding, shelter-acquired illnesses like treatable kennel cough, and being mothers with babies  are leading to their premature deaths. Rescues groups are also overwhelmed. The root of this crisis lies in overpopulation, a problem that could be significantly alleviated through widespread neutering. Yet, many pet owners in California face financial barriers that prevent them from accessing these essential veterinary services. The aftermath is overcrowded shelters and unnecessary euthanasia of perfectly adoptable pets. 

We need to act urgently to implement a state-funded program providing free neutering services to pet owners across California. Such a measure would curtail the stray population growth, the dumping of animals, and alleviate overcrowding in shelters, thus helping to ultimately reduce the necessity to face the heart-wrenching decision of euthanizing healthy animals. This is not just a matter of veterinary care; it’s about compassion, community responsibility, and respect for life. Statistics from the ASPCA show that approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Of these, around 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized, a significant percentage due to treatable conditions or simple lack of space. Imagine a California where shelters are not at capacity, where every dog, cat, and other pet has a chance to find a loving home.
