The Issue

Every day, as my children walk to and from school, they encounter individuals experiencing homelessness on the sidewalks. This exposure raises concerns for their safety and well-being. In Los Angeles, a city grappling with a significant homelessness crisis, we must explore humane and practical solutions to protect both our homeless neighbors and the children of our community.

One such solution is to allow homeless individuals to sleep in designated, secure areas within public parks between the hours of 10pm and 6am. Currently, many homeless people find makeshift sleeping arrangements on sidewalks or in other public spaces, which can disrupt the community and pose potential safety hazards. Designating specific areas within parks can provide a more organized and safer environment.

Designated areas in parks can be equipped with basic amenities, security measures, and regular supervision to ensure the safety of all individuals. This approach not just acknowledges the dignity of homeless individuals by providing them a safer place to rest, but also helps maintain a more organized urban environment where families, including children, feel comfortable moving freely.

According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, nearly 70,000 individuals were experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County as of the latest count. Creating safe, designated sleeping areas offers a step towards a compassionate community response to the homelessness crisis. It also allows for better management of public spaces, reducing the congestion on sidewalks and enhancing the general cleanliness and accessibility of our community streets.

Please join me in urging the Los Angeles City Council and local park authorities to implement this initiative. By signing this petition, you can help promote a solution that honors both the needs of the homeless community and the safety of our city's children. Let's work together for a humane and practical response to homelessness in Los Angeles. Sign and make a difference today!
