The Issue
Growing up in Chester, many perceive our community to be defined by its challenges and stereotypes. I can personally attest to this, having seen how these often overshadow our strengths and the immense talent lurking within our schools. However, I want to change that narrative by leveraging the countless young individuals filled with potential and talent at Chester High/STEM. This is why I am advocating for the establishment of both a boys and a girls lacrosse team in our school.
I have played lacrosse and can attest to its transformative power. It is more than just a sport; it’s an opportunity for personal growth, teamwork, and opening doors to scholarships and collegiate opportunities. Currently, our school is predominantly known for its football and basketball programs - both excellent in their own right - but why stop there when we can also become a stronghold for lacrosse?
There is absolutely no reason why Chester, a community represented largely by black and Hispanic students, shouldn’t break into a sport traditionally dominated by others. Lacrosse offers us the chance to show our diverse talents on another playing field. By establishing these teams, we are not just creating new sports opportunities; we are challenging racial barriers and showing that Chester’s identity and strengths span beyond traditional realms.
Let’s look at some facts that emphasize the importance and impact of lacrosse. With over 823,000 players and growing, lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing team sports in the United States. It’s played in more than 40 countries, and the likes of universities such as Syracuse, Duke, and Johns Hopkins proudly host premier programs that are rich in history and excellence. Lacrosse fosters a unique sense of discipline, teamwork, and agility; qualities that stay with players throughout their lives, shaping them into well-rounded individuals.
Our neighboring schools have already established lacrosse teams and are reaping the benefits of inclusion in such a rapidly growing and prestigious sport. It’s time Chester does the same. Let’s pave the way for our students to have more opportunities not only to excel in sports but to secure potential scholarships and build character along the way.
This is an appeal to our school board and the community. Let’s show that the students and athletes of Chester High/STEM are ready, eager, and deserving of this chance. Help us break new ground by supporting this petition to introduce boys and girls lacrosse teams to our school. Sign the petition today to make this vision a reality.
