Create an “Ugly” produce recovery program

Create an “Ugly” produce recovery program
The Issue
In 2024, my father was diagnosed with a terminal illness and had to stop working. Our family was thrown into financial instability, and I personally experienced the fear and stress that come with not knowing if there will be enough food on the table. It's an overwhelming burden that has made me acutely aware of how precious food is and how wasteful our current practices can be.
California alone wastes an astonishing 11 billion pounds of food every year. Shockingly, 40% of pre-packaged produce in U.S. supermarkets never reaches consumers because it doesn't meet arbitrary cosmetic standards. This means millions of pounds of perfectly healthy, safe-to-eat, and valuable fruits and vegetables are tossed away simply because they don't look "perfect." This is happening while countless families, like mine, deal with the crushing reality of food insecurity.
I propose the creation of an "Ugly" Produce Recovery program that targets the gap between food waste and food scarcity. This regional initiative would gather these so-called "imperfect" foods and redirect them to food banks and pantries that are desperate for fresh produce.
We can establish partnerships with local farms, supermarkets, and distributors to create a streamlined system for recovering and redistributing these foods. With public awareness campaigns, we can change the narrative of what "acceptable" produce looks like and promote the environmental and social benefits of utilizing these resources.
California has the opportunity to set an example for the rest of the country in agricultural sustainability and community health. By changing our handling of "ugly" produce, we can ensure that everyone's basic food needs are met and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Join me in demanding action to stop food waste and support families in need. Your signature can be the catalyst for change. Sign the petition now and let's make a difference together.
