Create an Amtrak "Queen Of The Valley" Train!

The Issue

Amtrak has unveiled a long-term plan to expand services throughout the United States, including the possibility of creating a service from New York City to Allentown, Pennsylvania and Beyond. Here is my idea, and I think it's a good one.

Amtrak should recreate the Queen Of The Valley train based on the former Central Railroad of New Jersey/Reading Railroad passenger train of the same name.

Here is the background of the Queen Of The Valley: It was a named train on the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ). Operating from 1911 to 1967 it was the longest continuing operating train of the CNJ. Also, its route was the longest in the system, operating on a 179.5 mile route, exceeding the CNJ's Atlantic City-bound Blue Comet.

The train originated in Jersey City at Communipaw Terminal, traveled south to Bayonne (but not stopping, until the train's later years), traversed the harbor at Elizabethport, headed west along the CNJ's Main Line. It continued past Elizabeth's CNJ station, Plainfield Station, to High Point station and Hampton, the current end point for the regular NJ Transit Raritan Valley Line commuter service. From there, the route continued to Phillipsburg Union Station, Easton, Pennsylvania, Bethlehem's CNJ Station and Allentown's Allentown Station. From Allentown, the train traveled along the territory of the Reading Railroad, continuing west to Reading (Reading Outer station) and finally to Harrisburg. In the mid-1930s it ran six days a week. In the early 1960s it was daily in operation. In 1967, the train service was terminated.

Amtrak should recreate the Queen Of The Valley and have it run between Pennsylvania Station in New York City and Harrisburg Transportation Center with intermediate stops at Hershey, Hummelstown, Lebanon, Reading, Bethlehem, Easton, and possibly Newark. The train should have all standard amenities Amtrak trains have to offer, including an on-board cafe, WiFi, and wheelchair accessible restrooms.
