Create a Yakima County public utility for sustainable energy

Create a Yakima County public utility for sustainable energy

### The Carpenter’s Vision: Rebuilding Our Grid from the Ground Up
I build things for a living. As a carpenter in Yakima County, I understand that the strength of a structure depends on its foundation and its efficiency. When I frame a house, every inch of material matters; every connection must be tight to ensure the heat stays in and the waste stays out.
For a long time, I’ve looked at our current energy landscape the same way I look at a poorly constructed building—and frankly, it’s a design failure. Reliance on distant, centralized energy sources is not sustainable, nor is it economically prudent for our community. We need an energy infrastructure that is as robust and efficient as the homes we build.
Energy independence is vital for Yakima County, both economically and environmentally. Establishing a Yakima County Public Utility District can take us from dependency to self-sufficiency. This shift promises not only to secure our energy needs locally but also to create jobs and stimulate the regional economy. The transition to local, renewable energy sources—like solar, wind, or hydropower—could help preserve our environment, reduce carbon emissions, and maintain the ecological balance that is crucial for our future.
Consider the economic benefits: Publicly owned utilities are typically more cost-effective for residents because profits are reinvested in the community or used to reduce rates. Across the U.S., public utility districts have proven to deliver lower electricity rates than their private counterparts. Furthermore, locally sourced renewable energy can spur job creation within Yakima County, from the construction of new facilities to ongoing maintenance and operations roles.
Environmental sustainability and economic viability don’t need to be opposing goals. With the right investments and planning, we can achieve both. An integrated local renewable energy initiative, guided by a public utility structure, can place Yakima at the forefront of responsible energy stewardship.
To the Yakima County Board of Commissioners and the Citizens of Yakima County, I urge you to support this initiative. Let’s collaborate to build a resilient, local energy infrastructure. Sign this petition to help us advocate for a future where Yakima County takes control of its energy destiny and thrives. Your support can be the foundation of a new energy future both sustainable and beneficial to all.
Together, we can be the architects of our own future. Please sign this petition to transform the vision of local energy independence into a reality.
