The Issue

As a woman who has endometriosis, I live daily with a condition that is not only debilitating but also invisible to most. Endometriosis, along with other chronic gynecological conditions, affects millions of women worldwide, causing severe pain, fatigue, and often leading to difficulties in fulfilling work and personal obligations. Despite its widespread impact, recognition and support for these conditions remain woefully insufficient - and as a mother of a daughter this saddens me so much.

Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, with over 200 million women across the globe enduring its harsh realities, according to the World Health Organisation. (It took me 21 years!) Yet, awareness and understanding of this condition are still limited, resulting in misdiagnosis or delayed treatment and a lot of the time leaving those alike myself only an option to pay for private healthcare -we shouldn’t have  to put ourselves into debit or financial difficulty only simply to be left with no treatment other than to go on the pill to keep it at bay - for me personally I was sick of artificial hormones inside my body after being on all types offered from the age of 14.
I could go on but that’s not the point here - Rant over!

Women suffering from endometriosis can miss work, face financial hardships, and experience significant impacts on their mental health - let alone the flare ups and cramps at ovulation that can affect your ability to walk and even sit.

A new employment law specifically protecting and supporting women with endometriosis and other gynecological chronic conditions is desperately needed. This legislation should mandate proper medical support, provide financial assistance, and ensure workplace accommodations such as flexible hours and the ability to work from home without penalty.
If Portugal can do it; why can’t we?!

Supporting this legislation not only means acknowledging the struggles of those with endometriosis but taking actionable steps to improve their quality of life. It would also set a precedent for the support of all women with chronic gynecological conditions, fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.

I urge lawmakers to take a stand for the millions of women who suffer in silence. We need policies that provide the necessary healthcare, support, and resources. Together, we can make a meaningful difference. Sign this petition to demand a law that recognizes and aids women affected by endometriosis and similar conditions.
