Create a VAPR option for Nebraskans in recovery

The Issue

My husband is a recovering alcoholic who has bravely navigated the rocky road of sobriety. However, the easy access to alcohol in Nebraska has often been a challenging obstacle. Each trip into our community can feel like a relentless battle against the temptation of purchasing alcohol.

Alcohol addiction affects thousands of families across Nebraska. The journey to recovery is not just about overcoming addiction but managing the environment that allows relapse to threaten newfound sobriety. In support of individuals like my husband and countless others, we are calling on Nebraska lawmakers to create a Voluntary Alcohol Purchase Restriction (VAPR) option. This initiative would allow individuals in recovery to voluntarily choose a driver's license (DL) flag that would prevent them from purchasing alcohol.

This proposed solution empowers Nebraskans who are committed to staying sober. It builds a supportive framework that acknowledges the courage it takes to seek help and stay on the path to recovery. Enabling individuals to voluntarily self-restrict their access to alcohol provides an additional layer of protection not only for those in recovery but also for their families, reducing the risk of relapse and associated harm.

Implementing the VAPR option is a significant stepping stone in fostering a supportive community environment for sobriety. By providing this choice, we help individuals take proactive control of their recovery journey in a manner that is constructive, respectful, and dignified.

We have an opportunity to lead by example in Nebraska and demonstrate how thoughtful policy can make a profound difference in the lives of individuals struggling with addiction. Research indicates that voluntary self-exclusion programs, like similar initiatives in gambling, have shown positive outcomes in managing compulsive behavior and promoting recovery.

Let's take a big step toward protecting our loved ones and strengthening our community by supporting the VAPR option. It's time to acknowledge the needs of those who are bravely fighting addiction and give them the tools to succeed in their sobriety.

Join us in urging Nebraska lawmakers to implement the Voluntary Alcohol Purchase Restriction option. Sign the petition to empower Nebraskans in recovery.
