Jason Asbury Pack Sr. is not just a name from the past but an integral part of my family's history and our community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. As my great great great grandfather, his story is woven into the fabric of my identity and has influenced generations of our family.
In 1837, Jason Asbury Pack Sr. made a momentous decision to purchase land, which would become a beacon of hope and progress for Black families in a time when freedom and land ownership were rare and precious. This land, affectionately known as Packtown, became a haven and symbol of advancement for Black homesteaders in our community. It stands today as a silent testament to the resilience and vision of its founder.
To honor his remarkable legacy and ensure that our history is never forgotten, we are seeking to create a ceremonial street sign in memory of Jason Asbury Pack Sr. This sign won't just represent a name but a story of courage, tenacity, and the undying spirit of seeking freedom and equity.
A ceremonial street sign in Anne Arundel County, where Packtown still exists, would serve as a permanent reminder of the impact that Jason A. Pack Sr. made on the lives of his descendants and the broader community. This recognition would also educate and inspire future generations about the power of determination and community building.
We ask for the community's support to urge the Anne Arundel County Council to approve this initiative. By signing this petition, you will help us commemorate a man who forged a path for others to follow, and celebrate the rich history and contributions of African American settlers in our county. Please join us in this endeavor to honor Jason Asbury Pack Sr. and keep the spirit of Packtown alive. Sign the petition today to make a difference.
