Tice Creek School, located in the heart of the Walnut Creek School District, is unlike any other school in the district. It combines elementary, middle, and special education sites, creating a diverse and vibrant learning environment for our children. Yet, despite this uniqueness, the challenges we face are immense—particularly in terms of competent leadership. Three principals took on the challenge in the past three years, and the fourth one is due to step up this year. Each transition affects not only the morale of the staff but also the educational experience and consistency for the students.

It's clear that no principal, no matter how talented they are, can tackle the myriad responsibilities of leading such a complex institution alone. This is why we are petitioning for a budgeted assistant principal position. An assistant principal would not only share the burdens of administrative duties but also round off the leadership skillset that is critical for the success of our diverse student body.

There are tangible benefits to adding an assistant principal. According to the National Association of Secondary School Principals, schools with adequate administrative staff have higher teacher retention rates, more robust student support services, and improved school culture, which directly impacts student achievement. Additionally, this role can aid in the professional development of teachers and build stronger community relations—a cornerstone for any successful school.

Given the complexity and the previous leadership disruptions, it is imperative for the Walnut Creek School District to acknowledge the specific needs of Tice Creek School. By mandating an assistant principal position, we can ensure consistent leadership that better meets the educational and social needs of our students, provides support to our educators, and strengthens the school community as a whole.
