Create a Music Elective at IPoly High School

The Issue

IPoly has always prided itself on being different from traditional schools. Students travel in tight-knit cohort groups, follow an 86-minute block schedule, and complete group-based projects every semester. Students are encouraged to be creative and to think outside the box, and yet one of the most creative fields is not represented: music.

IPoly covers every other creative outlet. There is a mixed media elective to teach art, a theatre elective to teaching acting and stage production, and a dance elective to teach choreography. The school has even recently welcomed a new professor to teach the aspects of graphic design. Currently, the only music related elective is music appreciation, which doesn't focus on teaching students how to play instruments or how to become successful musicians.

With the passing of Proposition 28 (which increases funds towards arts programs in schools), IPoly should be doing more to create a space for young musicians to learn more about music and to interact with other creatives. The least we can do is provide an elective that gives students access to the basics of music theory, music production, and music history.

Once this petition reaches 60 signatures, it will be sent to both the Principal of IPoly and the superintendent of the LACOE school district.
