The Issue
Subject: Legally acknowledge the sentience of non‑human animals to ensure moral, ethical, and scientific justice.
On average, 2.7 million shelter animals alone are being euthanized each year in the United States (this statistic is offered by the American society for the prevention of cruelty to animals)! The life of each one of these sentient beings is terminated with disregard to their feelings, rights and place on this planet as they are (by law) considered property.
Severe animal cruelty is raging throughout the country but the culprits are not really held accountable since there is no law to protect ANY ANIMAL as a sentient being! Intentional cruelty to animals is strongly correlated with other crimes, including violence against humans which is why it is paramount to not only create but also pass this law so that the perpetrators get the punishment that truly fits their crime! It is estimated that (each year) over 50 million animals are being used in barbaric and painful experiments where they are (for example) injected with chemicals or infected with a disease and then get killed once the experiment is over. This figure is only an estimate (and is probably much higher) as laboratories are not required to disclose any data regarding how many animals they use. More than 100 million animals are bred and kept in the most horrific conditions only to get killed, in gruesome ways, just to supply the fashion industry with their fur. These are just a few examples of the horrors that animals endure every single day. Tragically they barely scratch the surface of what these living beings go through in our society due to the lack of legal rights. With so many lives at stake, we need to come together to be the voice of the innocent. We cannot allow this to go on any longer! It is time to acknowledge that animals are living, feeling beings who deserve a status that reflects who they are. We have a very long and difficult journey ahead of us when it comes to animal rights and animal welfare but as long as they are considered property, nothing will truly change for them! That is why this law is long overdue and desperately needed! Once we actually achieve our goal, we can start working towards other “animal laws”, regulations, criminal prosecution, registries and much more to protect the innocent beings that are paying the ultimate price. I am a true believer of the fact that we can and will get this done as long as we all come together and shake the nation with our roar! Act now! CHANGE STARTS WITH ONE PERSON! Let each of us be that person and protect the lives of those that can not speak for themselves by demanding legal change.
