Create a firefighting mask for Sikhs in Canada

Create a firefighting mask for Sikhs in Canada

The Issue

My name is Amraj Bhinder and I am currently going into grade 12. I have wanted to become a firefighter since I was 7. One day I went on a field trip and got a sneak peek of what firefighting is all about. One of the teachers there told me I have to shave my beard because the SCBA need to seal with your face and I can't shave my beard because I am a Sikh. So I got in touch with a nearby fire station to see if they might be able to assist me with this issue.

Once they told me the same thing then I tried explaining that Sikhi requires that Singhs and Singhinis (followers of Sikhi) maintain their kesh (uncut hair) and wear a turban. They told me the same thing that they can't really do anything because they're just regular firefighters. So I told matters into my own hands.

I believe that it is both feasible and necessary to develop and adopt specialized respiratory masks that can accommodate turbans and facial hair without compromising safety or functionality. By doing so, we can ensure that Sikh firefighters are given the same opportunities to serve their communities as their peers while respecting their religious practices.

I urge fire departments, equipment manufacturers, and relevant regulatory bodies to:

1. Initiate research and development of Sikh-compatible respiratory masks.

2. Pilot and test these masks to ensure they meet safety standards.

3. Implement policies that allow for the use of these masks in active duty.

4. Provide training and resources to ensure all firefighters can effectively use the new equipment.

By signing this petition, I advocate for an inclusive and equitable fire service that honors the diversity of all its members. Let us take this important step towards ensuring that Sikh individuals can serve their communities without having to compromise their religious beliefs.
