The Issue

My small dog loves to be free to run and play at the park, but every time we visit Sonoma Park, she gets overwhelmed by the larger dogs present. There's nothing quite like seeing my little companion running with joy, her tiny legs carrying her as fast as she can go. However, the sheer size and energy of the larger dogs can quickly turn that joy into fear. While they mean no harm, their playful natures are intimidating to smaller dogs. With typically 5-6 large dogs in the park, it becomes almost impossible for my small dog to enjoy her time there.

Sonoma Park currently has dedicated spaces for children, where they can play without fear of being overrun. Similarly, our small dogs deserve a safe space where they can frolic without the fear of being accidentally harmed by larger dogs. A dedicated, fenced-off area for small dogs is not just a desire but a necessity. It would create a more harmonious environment in the park for all dog owners and their furry friends.

Creating a small dog area would not only offer peace of mind to owners like myself but also promote the well-being of the dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, when small and large dogs are kept apart in spaces designed specifically for their size, it significantly reduces the risk of undesired interactions and accidents. A simple solution like a small, fenced-off area could make Sonoma Park safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Let's call on our local park authorities to take this necessary step towards inclusivity for our small dogs. By signing this petition, you can help us advocate for a designated space in Sonoma Park where small dogs can thrive. Join me in making Sonoma Park a welcoming and safe haven for all dogs, regardless of their size.
