We are a group of Scottish Ambulance Service staff from across the country, campaigning for a fair, accessible and sustainable Ambulance Technician to Paramedic pathway. 

The Tech to Para Campaign is calling for a new Technician to Paramedic training pathway. One that recognises the skills, knowledge and experience technicians have already gained through years of dedicated and hard work on the road.

There are technicians working in communities across Scotland, from Pitlochry to Livingston, with years of frontline experience and the ambition to develop their careers. For many, however, leaving employment to undertake a full-time university degree simply isn't realistic alongside families, mortgages and other responsibilities.

The Scottish Government can make this happen. We are calling on Angela Constance, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, to take forward the work already undertaken in Scotland to develop this and work with ambulance staff to make a Technician to Paramedic pathway a reality.

Craig's story

"My name is Craig, and I have worked as a Technician with the Scottish Ambulance Service for five years.

My journey began when my wife, who was battling cancer, needed help one night. Two local first responders arrived before the ambulance crew and were fantastic at reassuring her during a frightening situation. I was so inspired by their care that I joined my local first responder group.

After several years volunteering, two paramedics encouraged me to join the Scottish Ambulance Service as a technician. Five years later, I've built up valuable experience working alongside technicians and paramedics across Scotland.

But I know I could do more for my patients. There are situations where, because of the limits of a technician's scope of practice, I cannot provide treatment that I know the patient needs.

That's why I support the Tech to Para Campaign. A new pathway would end the unfair situation that many good and hard working technicians find themselves in.

The skills and experience are already there. The commitment is already there. The technicians are already there, serving Scotland's communities every day.

We just need a pathway to do it.
