Create a domestic violence offender registry in Pennsylvania

Create a domestic violence offender registry in Pennsylvania
The Issue
Every individual has the right to feel safe and secure in their homes and communities. This belief is personal to me because knowing the threats to our safety could prevent us from becoming victims ourselves. In Pennsylvania, while we've taken significant strides in addressing domestic violence, there remains a glaring gap—there's no registry for domestic violence offenders.
Domestic violence is a pervasive and insidious problem affecting thousands of individuals and families across our state. According to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV), there were 109 domestic violence-related deaths in Pennsylvania in 2022 alone. These numbers aren't just statistics; they represent lives lost and families torn apart. Introducing a registry for domestic violence offenders in Pennsylvania could be a critical step in preventing such tragedies from recurring.
A registry would serve multiple purposes: it would empower individuals to make informed decisions about their safety and relationships, allow communities to be aware of potential dangers, and act as a deterrent for those contemplating such crimes. This would not only benefit individuals but also society as a whole by fostering safer communities and reducing the stigma surrounding victims who often suffer in silence.
States like Tennessee and Florida have already implemented such registries with positive results. In Florida, the Domestic Violence Offender Database has proven instrumental in both preventing new offenses and aiding in the swift resolution of cases. These registries serve as a model, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of such an initiative.
I urge you to consider implementing a domestic violence offender registry in Pennsylvania. By doing so, we can continue protecting victims and survivors while working towards eradicating domestic violence from our communities. Signing this petition is a step towards a safer Pennsylvania. Please join me in taking action now.
