The Issue
My name is Megan White, and I am from Yalobusha County. I am a survivor of domestic violence.
I was beaten and strangled multiple times by a man who had an extensive history of abuse and prior charges. Despite that history, there was no clear or accessible way for me—or others—to know the full extent of his past. Those gaps in the system nearly cost me my life.
Mississippi currently has no Domestic Violence Offender Registry, a crucial tool that could have protected me and countless others who remain at risk. While other types of offenders, such as sex offenders, are tracked through registries in many states, domestic violence offenders often fly under the radar, continuing to harm others due to the lack of transparency and accountability.
According to the CDC, "1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services, contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, etc." These alarming statistics are not just numbers—they represent real people whose lives are impacted every day.
A Domestic Violence Offender Registry would serve as a crucial tool to inform and protect communities from known abusers. It would empower individuals to make informed decisions about their safety and offer peace of mind, knowing that such transparency is available. Additionally, it would deter potential offenders by increasing the risk of exposure and accountability for their actions.
I urge the State of Mississippi to establish and maintain a Domestic Violence Offender Registry. This registry should include relevant details of those convicted of domestic abuse, ensuring that this information is readily accessible to the public.
We need to hold offenders accountable and protect our communities. Your signature can help bring about this necessary change, offering protection and preventing tragedies like mine from happening in the future.
