The Issue

I am a huge fan of Disney, and I believe that its magic can help to prevent suicide.

A while ago, Disney had made a sleep hotline to help children get a good night sleep. It features the voices of fan favorite characters, such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, and Goofy. When I first discovered this, it got me thinking: What if there was a version of this that was a hotline for people with suicidal thoughts? What better way to convince people of their worth in the world than with the soft, comforting voices of longtime beloved childhood characters?

Mental health struggles and thoughts of suicide affect millions of people worldwide. During moments of intense crisis, fear, or loneliness, reaching out for help can feel incredibly daunting. Traditional hotlines, while vital and lifesaving, can sometimes feel clinical or intimidating to someone in a vulnerable state. There is a profound need for comforting, familiar, and accessible touchpoints that break down the stigma of seeking help and offer immediate emotional reassurance.

Disney has a long history of using its characters to bring comfort, hope, and joy to people during their darkest times—whether through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, hospital visits, or special initiatives. A few years ago, Disney launched a successful bedtime hotline featuring the comforting voices of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and Goofy to help children feel safe and fall asleep.

If Disney characters can use their voices to soothe a child's nighttime anxiety, they can also be a powerful tool to offer comfort to people experiencing feelings of worthlessness, isolation, or despair.

We are petitioning the Walt Disney Company to create a dedicated mental health and suicide prevention initiative. This could look like a specialized hotline or digital resource accessible globally, online, and via QR codes throughout Disney theme parks.

To ensure maximum safety and efficacy, this initiative would ideally operate as a partnership between Disney and established professional crisis networks (such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).

For these reasons, I suggest that Disney creates its own suicide prevention hotline. It can be accessed anywhere, even in Disney theme parks. Let's banish negative thoughts such as  worthlessness and misery, and replace them with positive thoughts including hope, magic, love, and much more!
