The Issue

As a parent, I encourage my children to learn independence and get exercise from cycling and walking to friends and activities. Active travel benefits are not only for my family but other members of the community as well. The redevelopment of Brunel Walk N15 could undoubtedly present an opportunity for such safety and convenience. Unfortunately in the developer’s current plans travel routes through the adjoining community garden will worsen the connectivity between our community and the businesses of West Green Road, impeding active travel.

Brunel Walk redevelopment holds incredible potential to reimagine the adjacent community garden into an inviting "community pocket park." Such a space would enhance the environmental benefits of our surroundings and contribute positively to local health. In fact, UK public health studies show that access to green spaces can reduce health inequalities between rich and poor, reduce stress, and encourage physical activity (Source: National Health Service, UK).

But the current plans ignore this opportunity. Local community organisations Fountain Area Residents' Association (FARA) and Haringey Cycle Campaign (HCC) have jointly developed an alternative vision which would maximise the potential for our community in this redevelopment. We are advocating for an environment that promotes healthy lifestyles and fosters community engagement, which would be serving both the new council home residents and the wider community.

Below is the design that the contractor has proposed. It does not bring any of the surrounding garden and roads into the design, cutting off abruptly at the boundary of the build and it does not harmonise with the existing garden. We previously had separate cycle and pedestrian ramps.  In the new design, the cycle ramp has gone, replaced by a disabled access path which questionably satisfies the requirements of a wheelchair, with a dangerous 90 degree bend being hard to manoeuvre around, and potentially creating conflict between users.

Our ask is simple. Rethink the redevelopment plans for the community garden. Create a pocket park that serves as a safe and active travel route, enhancing the lifestyle of our community members. Open up the boundary to include the wider area brings so many benefits, and now is the time to make these changes. The redevelopment of this site is a once in a lifetime opportunity - we cannot let this opportunity be missed. Sign this petition and let's move forward with a community-centric redevelopment plan
