Create a 25 mph safety zone in Harker Heights neighborhoods

The Issue

Living in Harker Heights includes the everyday passage along Verna Lee, a 30-mile-per-hour throughway in our community. However, the safety of our neighborhoods is threatened once we turn onto Windy Hill Rd. or Old Oak Rd. These streets, lined with residential properties, are home to young children, handicapped children, and the elderly. Yet, there are no stop signs for at least a mile between, allowing cars to continuously exceed the speed limit. This has become hazardous, endangering the lives of our loved ones.

The community of Harker Heights deserves better. Our neighborhoods, parks, and especially areas around schools should be sanctuaries of safety with a reduced speed limit of 25 miles per hour. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reducing speed limits in residential areas significantly decreases the likelihood of accidents and enhances the safety of pedestrians. Many similar communities have successfully implemented these changes, resulting in safer streets for both drivers and pedestrians.

We propose the establishment of a 25 mph safety zone around homes, parks, and schools in Harker Heights. This means placing additional signage, implementing speed bumps where necessary, and increasing law enforcement presence during peak hours to ensure compliance.

The change we are advocating for is not unprecedented nor overly burdensome. Cities across Texas and beyond have recognized the value of such safety zones, leading to decreased accidents and increased public safety. By banding together as a community, we can convince our city officials to prioritize the safety of Harker Heights' residents.

Let us call upon the City of Harker Heights to proactively safeguard our neighborhoods. Sign this petition to protect our children, loved ones, and community members. Encourage city decision-makers to act promptly in instituting a 25 mph speed safety zone, ensuring a safer environment for all who call Harker Heights home. Your support is crucial! Together, let’s make our streets a safe place for everyone.
