Use the site of the closing Morrisons supermarket to open an indoor local market.
The Issue
From seeing and hearing comments online and in person, it is clear that there is a feeling that Crawley has declined a lot as a shopping hub, community, and social centre for local residents and others from outside coming in.
It is clear that the feeling seems to be that Crawley used to be a town with identity and unique selling points that made a town feel special. Since I've grown up in Crawley, I've certainly seen it change from a vibrant, positive town centre to a soulless, shell of its former glory. Many attempts have been made to brighten it up, but now it's just a miss-match of coffee shops, charity shops and chain stores selling the same stuff as anywhere else.
With the news of Morrisons closing, We the people of Crawley, don't want to see yet another failed, massive corporate superstore of the type that have destroyed and swallowed local businesses of the last few decades. I feel it's a prime opportunity to do something a little different and offer Crawley residents something exciting. A large indoor market with independent vendors and local businesses selling local food, materials, and other handy goods to local people, boosting the local economy and drawing people in to the town from outside. It might cost a lot to start off but the long term benefits will almost certainly pay back with the novelty, location and goods on offer.
I stress that this should be based on local independent sellers and businesses, preferably with a sustainable business plan based on selling locally made goods and locally sourced foods.
