Albury Major Kevin Mack issued this statement to ABC News regarding the rape of a teenager at knifepoint by three assailants.
Cr Mack encouraged women to walk in groups in an effort to discourage offenders.
"I always have encouraged women not to walk alone, to have someone with them at all times, because that in itself is an invitation for someone to take advantage of you," he said.
This is cut-and-dry victim-blaming. It is a grossly false idea ingrained into our society which does not need perpetuating by public figures. Perhaps instead discourage offenders from abhorrent behaviour, rather than insinuating that taking a walk alone in a park is inviting a criminal act.
Here are some important points for Cr. Mack to consider when reissuing his statement and/or apology:
- 33 women have been killed in domestic violence this year alone, which is entirely unacceptable.
- There is no reason to rape - there is no onus on the victim to stop a crime from happening to them.
- No conduct is ever an invitation for someone to take advantage of you.
- I sincerely apologise for my misguided comments.
