Prevention of Cedar Lane Park East Proposed Fire Station Location

The Issue

It was discovered purely by accident that there are plans to build a new fire station on Cedar Lane Park East estimated to be about 20 feet from the residential housing development on the west side (Cedar Lane Manor) and about 40 to 50 feet from the east side development along Eliots Oak Road directly below route 108.  Most importantly, this is not a petition to have the Fire Station in North Columbia area completely disbanded but to find an alternative location that would not add to the current congestion and dangers that drivers experience in this area of Route 108, removing a highly valued park resource where there are community sports, playgrounds for children, an area of resource that people can interact, reduced crime rates, clean air, mental health especially in our pandemic time, physical activity and most importantly to protect our natural ecosystems.  Local residents know very well the wildlife that the park brings to our community.  If the fire station is built, there are many concerns including the obvious sound interference as sirens are measured at 120 decibels equivalent to that of a loud rock show at Merriweather.   According to the "Federal Emergency Management Agency United States Fire Administration", hazardous materials can be found at fire stations therefore affecting the natural resources surrounding the proposed location.  In addition, fire stations normally host community events that are valued to our community however the proposed location is too small to support what can be large events that would interfere with local resident's quality of life.  Pertaining to the property values in the adjacent developments, the website, realtor.com published an article in 2017 reporting that living next to a fire station within .1 mile (176 yards) will lower the property value by 1.8%.  Given the information and statistics, we are asking the community to support and sign to help the community value its parks, the value of its neighboring developments and not adding to the congestion and dangers that route 108 already demonstrates.  Thank you.
