Remove Confederate Statue in Lexington, MS

The Issue

This petition is intended for the removal of the confederate monument located on the town square in Lexington, MS.

Unveiled December 2, 1908, the confederate monument represents a tainted and racially divided history. Wiley N. Nash, Mississippian and Civil War veteran stated, “these Confederate monuments, these sacred memorials, tell in silent but potent language, that the white people of the South shall rule and govern the Southern states forever." Eighty percent (80%) of Lexington’s population is Black. However, in the heart of the town lies a constant reminder of the Old South. It silently promotes the ideas of the Confederacy, which supports white supremacy and the institution of slavery. Mississippi’s Succession Plan affirmed these statements. The document reads, “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world.” Please help us in our efforts to remove this symbol of white supremacy.

This monument is not an accurate representation of our population, nor is it a symbol of progression for the citizens of Holmes County. The statue must be removed.

Sincerely,

Citizens of Holmes County
