COUNCIL- NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSING NEEDED FOR ROAD USER AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
The issue
A pedestrian crossing is now desperately needed across Yeo St from the Uniting Church on the corner of Barry St, it was never a great crossing option for pedestrians but now with the explosion of reckless e-bikers and e-bike couriers and courier vehicles in general up some 160% since COVID it is now becoming a hazardous spot to cross particularly for the elderly and parents with young children.
So the community needs a new “Wombat pedestrian crossing” to calm the new with the old traffic to provide pedestrians with a safe passage across Yeo St, that includes children from the St John’s Daycare and the after school care and events held on the grounds of the Uniting Church.
Unlike the “Wombat pedestrian crossings” the proposed “bike lanes” will NOT calm traffic and protect pedestrians on Yeo St 24/7 they will just stop the already slow traffic flow at peak times because the Wycombe Rd and Yeo St intersection will be reduced to one lane so vehicles turning left to access Military Rd will block all other vehicles wanting to continue along Yeo St or turn right on to Wycombe Rd this will also increase vehicle pollution on Yeo St!
The Uniting Church pedestrian crossing point is the missing link to a safer Yeo St but also the Bydown St pedestrian crossing needs a refurbishment because it has very little height and it is used by school children.
All other streets and roads crossing Yeo St from Watson Street to Rangers Rd have pedestrian crossings.
The map with graphics below shows where the pedestrian crossing and traffic calming is missing and needed to protect pedestrians and other road users 24/7.
The safe crossing points from Watson Street to Bydown St are evenly spaced but then there is a large gap to Wycombe Rd. The gap between Wycombe Rd and Rangers Rd is not a concern because there are no residential streets or roads going off Yeo St on that section and no Daycare Centres etc. By closing the gap drivers will tend to remain at the first crossing speed for comfort rather than accelerating.
North Sydney Council must now complete the traffic calming spacing so it is consistent all the way from Watson St to Wycombe Rd.
I have discussed the two options with a NSW Planning Civil Engineer and he opposes the bike lanes because the road is too narrow and agrees that the pedestrian crossing is the best option to improve both road user and pedestrian safety.
The installation of a new pedestrian crossing across Yeo St from the Uniting Church is straightforward and it will drastically improve safety for road users and pedestrians with NO parking spaces being lost!
The Council has successfully reduced speeding and traffic accidents by implementing similar measures along Yeo St so they just need to finish the job or perhaps ask for assistance from the NSW Government because they introduced the rent to ride e-bikes!
According to a study by the NRMA, areas with designated pedestrian crossings saw a reduction in accidents by up to 63%!
Establishing a crossing in this location will ensure that every resident can move about the neighbourhood more freely and with more safety.
In addition it will allow those exiting the busy May Lane from Barry Street Carpark and residential and commercial buildings to exit more safely. The addition of a mirror would also not go amiss because large parked vehicles in particular can block the line of sight of those exiting (see photo).
We now urge North Sydney Council to prioritise a pedestrian crossing at this location.

19 pedestrians including 2 dogs in just 15 and a bus whizzing past 😳.
“Wombat pedestrian crossings” come in 3 heights 75mm, 100mm and 150mm this is considered the optimum height for pedestrian safety and traffic calming!
We must have the 150mm and the Bydown St crossing must be refurbished to 150mm!
