The Chinatown on Olive Blvd. is actually the 3rd Chinatown that St. Louis has had, as the 2 previous ones including Hop Alley downtown were razed to make way for developers.

Now, Costco and University City want to tear down part of the existing Chinatown in St. Louis to make way for a $170M development with a $70M handout from the taxpayers, with Costco as the anchor tenant. University City has already said that they would use eminent domain to remove African American homeowners and immigrant business owners to make way for Costco. The businesses there like Bob's Seafood, Beyer's Lumber, Tai Ke, Pho Long, Dao Tien, De Palm Tree, and more, have never gotten a tax subsidy to be in UCity and create jobs -- although some of those businesses have been there for decades, feeding generations of St. Louisans (and beyond.)

To make matters worse, a resident found a $27M dollar error in University City's math that makes it unlikely that the development will work out financially, but University City and Costco haven't said how they'll address this. University City city council is dead set on voting on this, so the way this stops is if Costco pulls out.

Even though local businesses have asked for information for 2-3 years, and for the information to be translated, neither Costco nor elected officials have met with all the impacted businesses or residents, some of which are not fluent in English. University City likes to call itself "neighborhood to the world" but doesn't respect the diversity and culture that exists, and is intent on erasing history -- for a third time. For a Costco across from a hotel.

If the developer even is able to complete the project. Novus, the developer, previously failed Sunset Hills and left a community in its wake with no development, and homeowners swinging in the wind. The same lawyers and consultants who were involved in Sunset Hills are involved with this development.

Tell Costco to stay out of University City and Chinatown!
