Etty Fabber started this petition to Costco and

I was about to purchase a Costco membership when I stumbled upon a piece in the New York Times that exposed the way Costco treats their chickens.

The reason I wanted to get this membership was because I thought that Costco was more progressive being one of the largest retailers in the world. I was so disappointed to see how wrong I was. I did more digging and read comments on Costco’s social media from animal rights activists.

This is when I discovered what is really happening behind the scenes. Costco Chickens are bred to grow so unnaturally large that they can't support their own weight. These chickens suffer from blisters and burns on their bodies, and  struggle to breathe. They are crammed into tiny filthy sheds lying in their own waste.

Costco’s motto is “do the right thing,” which is ironically not what they are doing. Please help me ask Costco to do the right thing and adopt the Better Chicken Commitment, a set of welfare standards for chickens that is backed by veterinarians and supported by animal rights activists. The world has gone through a lot this year but we won't tolerate this kind of animal abuse. As consumers we care about animal welfare and so should Costco.
