Costa Coffee: 5p Disposable Cup Charge for Charity In Effort To Go Plastic Free

Costa Coffee: 5p Disposable Cup Charge for Charity In Effort To Go Plastic Free
The Issue
Last year, it was announced that Coca-Cola has paid £3.9bn to buy Costa, the UK’s biggest coffee chain, which now has more than 2,400 shops in the UK and 1,400 in more than 30 international markets, as well as operating a self-serve business.
Coca-Cola is the world’s biggest soft drinks company and it produces over 110 billion single-use plastic items a year. Billions end up in rivers, on beaches and ultimately in our oceans.
Global competitor, Starbucks, have placed a 5p charge on disposable coffee cups at selected outlets, which will be donated to an environmental charity. This has led to a 150 per cent increase in reusable cup use.
Let’s call on Costa, to follow suit!
The reason for discouraging the use of disposable cups:
- Just 1% of the 2.5bn disposable cups thrown away each year in the UK are recycled
- Half a million cups are littered every day
- Packaging producers only pay for 10 percent of the cost of packaging disposal and recycling
- 20 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans every year
Although Costa's coffee cups are made of card, not all cups are plastic free, and not all are recycled. Furthermore, all Costa Coffee lids are made of plastic. Despite Costa's best efforts, they need to be doing more.
Brands like Costa Coffee need to lead the way and show Coca-Cola, and the world, the proof of concept that going plastic-free is achievable for large companies across the globe.
As part of the move toward Plastic Free Coffee Shops, we challenge Costa Coffee to:
Charge an additional 5p for customers requiring disposable cups (including for cold drinks) - donating 100% of the 5p to a plastic pollution charity.
