No to Mink Eyelashes!

The Issue

What kind of world do we live in where we are not only exploiting animals for food, and clothing, (as well as harming our own planet/causing starvation in the process), but now for pure vanity and nothing else? This disgusting act of animal cruelty and abuse must stop now.

Recently, I have seen too many Facebook and Twitter status' where people are asking where they can get mink lashes done, all over the country! I have been especially shocked to see so many posts from women going to the 10 day festival known to be the biggest, most 'peace-loving' festival in the world - Burning Man - and wanting this horrid 'beauty' treatment done.

While I am sure that most people probably don't know these mink lashes are made from fur, there are some who are outwardly accepting of this fact yet still position themselves as people who embrace all living entities - As a Burning Man fan, this is a total outrage!

We have, quite simply, lost the plot!

To clear up any ridiculous claims that these mink lashes 'don't actually harm the animals' and come from 'brushing the animals fur' - please know this:

As Anne Vickan said in her Boston Magazine:

"So when a local salon recently contacted me about their PETA-friendly mink eyelash extensions, I decided to do a little extra research to find out whether or not the claim was true. I have to admit I was skeptical — and having a hard time imagining anyone “gently brushing” these relatively aggressive animals (related to weasels and badgers) and returning them to a natural habitat.

I e-mailed PETA to ask whether or not the lashes are indeed kosher by their standards. Jane Dollinger, a media liaison, responded via e-mail: “These lashes are not PETA-approved. Even if the companies that sell mink eyelashes claim to obtain the fur by brushing live minks, those minks still suffer on farms and ultimately will be killed for their fur. We encourage consumers to choose alternatives to any materials that are derived from animals, ensuring that they are not contributing to an industry that causes suffering.

Now, I don’t know if all mink lashes come from animals on fur farms, but here’s some food for thought: Mercy for Animals, an Ohio-based nonprofit, points out some of the cruel conditions that minks suffer on breeding farms, including self-mutilation, small cages, chronic stress, and infected wounds."

Come on ladies! WAKE UP!!!

Mandy Carter, who has been campaigning against the fur trade for many years says "There is no situation where mink fur could be "harvested" apart from on a fur farm. There is also no kind of mink farm where they are allowed to roam free. Mink would not be able to be kept free-range because they are aggressive, solitary animals and would fight each other within the restricted area.

Life on a fur farm is nothing short of horrific. Along with being kept in tiny, wire bottomed cages, mink are not given access to water to bathe in despite being semi-aquatic animals. They are also not able to roam. Yet in the wild they would travel for miles every day. Because mink are not domesticated animals they are naturally afraid of humans, and being kept in dirty, wire cages is awful for them, going against all their natural instincts.

There is nothing humane or ethical about depriving these animals of their behavioral and physiological needs. Fur-farming is nothing more than torture."

There are a million arguments about why natural is better, but that's another story and another journey. But come on, seriously. This HAS to stop. Your face, quite simply, is better without it.

I'm starting this petition to make it known that we stand against this and any other absurd, vain act which exploits animals on our watch. Join me!
