Change Churchill Ave to Samaad Z Frazier Ave

The Issue

Samaad Zaire Frazier was born on June 21, 2000, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Samaad was educated in the Franklin Township School System and graduated in 2018 from Franklin High School. From there, Samaad extended his studies at Kean University in fall 2018. Samaad's love for basketball began at the age of 5. From the beginning, he was an advanced star player winning several trophies throughout his life. He won many championships and tournaments while playing for Newark Project Pride, school teams, and many AAU teams He was well known, and well respected by teachers and students alike. Unfortunately on December 31st, 2019, Samaad was murdered on Churchill Avenue where he spent most of his time with his close friends.

Samaad was one of the more popular kids in Franklin Township. He was loved by many because of his sense of humor, loyalty, and love for his family and friends. Samaad spent his last 2 years with his group The 5amily: Terrod, Tayo, Tyree, Tony, Dominic, Davon, Danny, Davay, Quincy, Omar, Obrian, and Syed. Samaad's last summer was documented on YouTube for all to see. In it, you can watch him make others laugh and watch him enjoy the time he had with his friends. Left to cherish his memories are his mother and father Kimberly and Malachi. Brothers, Jamaal, Nyle, and Malachi Jr. Sister Samiyah Frazier and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, and friends

Within hours of Samaads passing, the youth of Franklin Township was left without words or thoughts to comprehend the death of such an amazing and courageous young man. For at least a month straight, social media became flooded with Samaad's memories and heartfelt moments he shared with family, friends, and teammates. Social media marched with the hashtag #LLKM (Long Live King Maady) flooding everyone's timelines. Samaad's family received hundreds of donations from all across the country within hours, in hopes of paying for his sudden funeral.

Although losing anyone young or old is a terrible experience one has to endure, one thing that Samaad's passing shed a light on, was how much of a footprint and legacy he left behind. Mother Kimberly is continuing to stay strong and keep her son's name alive by creating blogs, AAU teams, protests, and events in honor of Samaad. So to continue his legacy, his family and friends would like to honor him by changing Churchill Ave in Somerset New Jersey, to Samaad Z Frazier street or receive an honorary street name to continue his legacy and his story.

Samaad isn't the only reason the street should be renamed. The street is actually named after Winston Churchill who is known to be racist. Winston Churchill once said: “I hate Indians…they are beastly people with a beastly religion.” He also referred to Palestinians as “barbaric hordes who ate little but camel dung”. These do not reflect the values of American citizens. With what's going on in America today, with the lynching of African Americans, this street name is a spit in the face to the oppressed people in America.

With the help of the homeowners of Churchill Ave, Franklin Township residents, and City Council, we can continue Samaads legacy as we move forward every day with his name and memories in our hearts.
