Stop Sutton Coldfield's Burton Menswear and Dorothy Perkins from closing down and changing to Primark!

The Issue

Burton Menswear is one of the UK's leading men's clothing & fashion retailers, with a large range of clothes available for both formal and casual events. In addition, Dorothy Perkins stocks the latest high street fashion trends for females in sizes ranging 6-22. These stores ensure that a large range of styles are available for the everyday shopper on the high street. The stores add to the atmosphere of Sutton Coldfield, both stores providing a unique, wearable and affordable fashion for men and women aged around 20-35.

The idea as to whether the Primark company is good or bad is still controversial. The shop attracts customers based on the low prices, the bargains that appear to stock the shelves of the store. However, the low-cost clothes come at a high price for the young children in Indian sweatshops who work all day in order to produce the stock at the rate that is required for the Primark stores. More stores opening will mean an increasing number of children as young as 11 working for pennies. Primark has had issues with the use of child labour in 2008 and after a BBC Panorama investigation, a programme was screened. This documentary alerted the public to the use of child labour by Primark and highlighted the life of one individual, 11-year-old Mantheesh who was paid only 60p a day

In 2014, there were labels emerging, supposedly a cry for help from the workers for Primark. Such labels include "forced to work exhausting hours" and "Degrading sweatshop conditions". One of the notes was wrapped around a prison identity card and suggested that the "prisoner" was forced to work 15 hours a day.

There are so many reasons as to why another Primark store should not be opened and Dorothy Perkins/Burton should be left but one person's views alone will not make a difference- this is why we need the public's voice calling for the same

Thank you,

Cara
