Save the Surfin' Gherkin @ The Krog Den Newquay

The Issue

Please show your support for a small local business that's been shut down by Cornwall Council for "trading too close to the public highway". We need signatures to show that the public support our presence and to help secure the street trading licence that's been requested (3 week response time). We're hoping it may help speed up the process as we may miss the short summer season trading if it goes to a hearing (+ another 3 weeks minimum).

The Surfin’ Gherkin is a plant-based, health-food trailer, and community uplift project with the aim to connect and promote local artists, foraging guides, musicians, photographers, yoga instructors, dance teachers, and small businesses, to the locality and tourists alike. Working alongside other retailers, activity centers and restaurants, we help to fuel the fun with good food, speciality iced tea's, a welcoming atmosphere and recommendations for the general public regarding interesting activities to do in Newquay.

I’m currently based outside the Krog Den Newquay. When I'm not serving food, cleaning or playing a bit of guitar, I help direct people into the store for pre-loved surfing gear, which helps reduce waste from the surfing and watersports industry. On an experiential level, collectively we’re helping bring a genuine & relaxed surfing community atmosphere to the top of end of the high street, which is invaluable to a town that markets itself as a surfing holiday destination, and to surfers that call the town home. Hungry surfers and divers frequent at the Surfin' Gherkin (and have found some great deals on boards and wetsuits as a result of talking with us).

All raw food waste goes to The Harmony Farm Project in Perranporth; we are working towards more of a closed-loop economy, where “waste” produce is used effectively to facilitate more locally grown, and consumed produce. It is our hope to demonstrate the efficacy and benefits of close-to-home collaboration between small businesses. Outside the Surfin Gherkin @ The Krog Den we have both waste and recycling bins available for public use, and I actively help clean the surrounding forecourts.

We sell speciality teas and iced teas, Mama's cakes, and plant based food. We don’t sell coffee as I’d rather direct people to some of the various fantastic coffee shops in Newquay. We offer something different and unique to the locality.

The general response from the public has been warm, welcoming, full of intrigue and enjoyment.

We have written support from 20+ surrounding businesses, including 10+ cafes and restaurants. The general agreement is that there's more than enough trade for everyone.

Our presence near the high street allows us to better advertise lesser-known local businesses, artists, events and activities with our community board.

Please email (thesurfingherkin@gmail.com) to talk to us about our partners and help support the Surfin' Gherkin on our endevour to offer good vibes, harmonious collaborations and good food & drink to the people of Newquay! Also please get in touch if you wish to partner with us!
