Why this petition matters
Started by Power Group East Cork
The reason for an objection to this proposed pig factory farm is due to concerns such as:
- Air: emissions related to bio aerosols lead to strong smells that are toxic to the nervous and respiratory system.
- Water:
-Surface: The site has the potential to drain into the Womanagh river that leads into the Womanagh estuary which is a very important habitat for thousands of migratory birds and local fishing;
-Fishing: The Womanagh river is an important crab and shrimp fishery for the fisherman that fish out of Knockadoon. The mouth of the estuary is also only one of two spawning areas for European Seabass on the south coast of Ireland with many thousands of School Bass congregating there during the spawning season. - Ground: All households within several kilometres of the proposed site have private bored wells and the water quality could be affected by contaminated run off or potential leakage of toxic chemicals into local water courses from the site.
- Environment: The slurry produced on the proposed site is estimated to exceed 7,000,000+ Litres annually and would be spread over a huge area in East Cork ranging from North of Mount Uniacke to Shanagarry in the South and West to Midleton and Whitegate.
- Residency: Likely devaluation of houses within several kilometres of the site.
- Health: Much of the meat that is processed from this type of industrial sized food production is associated with serious health risks in humans – heart disease and cancer for example.
- Recreation & Leisure: Odour and increased HGV traffic will compromise the benefits of the newly created Midleton-Youghal Greenway, Glenbower Wood, Knockadoon cliff walk, and the beaches at Youghal, Pilmore, Garryvoe and Inch.
- Animal Welfare: The conditions that these pigs are raised in are cruel as they never see the outdoors. This kind of industrial farming is completely outdated as people nowadays chose to buy free range, organic and meat replacement products.
