What We Saw
Coppell ISD board members are dedicated and intelligent individuals. Several trustees openly raised concerns, showing they need — and want — help from the community to bring forward constructive suggestions and alternatives.
But here are some hard truths from last night:
- Leadership in Question – Interim Superintendent Doug Williams, hired from Sunnyvale ISD, has shown a clear lack of familiarity with Coppell’s neighborhoods and communities. His dismissive tone toward teachers and residents, and his push to rush this process, have deepened community mistrust.
- Board Unease – Even Board President David Caviness admitted on Sept 22 that he expected another school to be recommended just a week earlier — underscoring how shaky this “data-driven” process really is. Trustee Leigh Walker said she is not convinced TCE is the right choice. Trustee Jonathan Powers asked for more regeneration data. Trustee Anthony Hill stressed the need to pause and rethink.
- Bad Timing – The October 6th vote comes just one day before Dr. Leanne Shivers — who knows Coppell well — begins her role as superintendent. Why force such a monumental decision under interim leadership instead of letting the new superintendent guide it?
Why the Outrage?
- 💸 $4 Million Wasted – Brand-new renovations, discarded overnight.
- 📊 Cherry-Picked Data – A shaky rubric riddled with contradictions.
- 🚦 No Safety or Traffic Plan – No professional studies done.
- 💰 Financial Shell Game – Claiming hardship while funding other expansions.
- 🏡 Property Values at Risk – Closing a top-performing, walkable school threatens Coppell’s appeal.
- 👧 Student Instability – Kids shuffled until 2028 before TCE closes.
- 🏗️ Land-Use Concerns – Site could be redeveloped into apartments or commercial space, disrupting Coppell’s civic core.
