Coordinated Arts Program (CAP) Indigenous Focused Class
Coordinated Arts Program (CAP) Indigenous Focused Class
The Issue
On 23 January 2026, the leader of the far-right OneBC party, Dallas Brodie, hosted an event on the UBC campus to debate with UBC students about whether well-documented atrocities incurred at residential schools “really happened.” OneBC and Brodie, for rhetoric declared the “antithesis of reconciliation” by the BC First Nations Leadership Council, have been barred from visiting schools across the province such as Thompson Rivers University and the University of Victoria. Yet, while the University of British Columbia has made statements committing themselves to reconciliation, cooperation with Indigenous Peoples, and zero tolerance for anti-Indigenous cultural violence and discrimination, this extremist party was allowed to visit our campus and possibly compromise the wellbeing of Indigenous students and faculty. Furthermore, this event demonstrates the urgent need to make immediate, concrete change to support truth and reconciliation. The student response to Brodie’s arrival, which we saw to be overwhelmingly one of solidarity with Indigenous peoples through an alternative event, demonstrates that we are ready for bold action. Thus, to address UBC’s deficiencies in upholding its commitments to Indigenous people–including under the Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP) – we would like to demand mandatory opportunities to learn about Indigenous history and social justice within the CAP Law and Society stream. Not only are these topics extremely relevant for us in this CAP stream for their connections to Canadian law; Indigenous learning is also directly linked to ISP calls to action #20, 24, and 25.
A group of students in the Law and Society stream of CAP are putting forward a petition to make a change to our education. As students, we have the responsibility to advocate for for our education. If you feel that you yourself would benefit from the inclusion of such a class in your stream, we would greatly appreciate if you could show your solidarity by signing this petition.
