"Cool Schools for Roy, UT: Ensure Accessible and Effective Air Conditioning in Weber School District"

The Issue

This petition gained 30 signatures in under 24 hours.  Which is good progress, but we need thousands if we are going to make a difference folks.

We need to step up, sign if you haven't already, have your spouse and parents and siblings sign as well. And share as widely as you can.

If you are not aware, several schools in Roy do not have air conditioning. This was a surprise to me. Evidently, some schools that DO have AC aren't running it or it's broken. School starts tomorrow and do we really want to send our kids into a heat baked building?

We're lucky that it's rainy and cooler this week but we will see several weeks of 90+ degree heat this year and next spring while class is in session.

This is not just about comfort. Excessive heat is a health risk AND a detriment to learning. There are numerous studies and reports that have investigated the effects of excessive heat on child learning and cognitive performance.

  • National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER): A working paper from the NBER found that for every 1°F increase in school year temperature, student learning decreases by one percent on average.
  • Harvard Kennedy School: A study suggested that hot temperatures reduce cognitive skill development and the effect is more significant for low-income and minority students.
  • Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis: A paper in this journal showed that heat exposure leads to significant reductions in educational achievement, even in the U.S. where air conditioning is common.
  • Economic studies: Various studies have shown that hotter school days reduce standardized test scores and have lasting impacts on future earnings and economic outcomes.

We are required to send our kids to school. The vast majority of us cannot homeschool for a host of reasons. We are literally being forced to force our own kids to go to school without AC.

Please, if this concerns you, sign the petition.

As a concerned parent residing in Roy, Utah, I am deeply troubled by the lack of working and effective air conditioning systems in our public schools within the Weber School District. The scorching desert heat that engulfs our region during the school year poses significant challenges to our children's well-being and their ability to learn effectively.

My personal story is one shared by many parents in this community. Every day, I witness my children returning home from school exhausted, dehydrated, and unable to concentrate due to extreme heat exposure throughout their academic day. It is disheartening to see them struggle under such uncomfortable conditions when they should be thriving in a conducive learning environment.

It is crucial that we take immediate action to address this issue. Broken air conditioning units must be repaired promptly, ensuring that students are not left sweltering without relief during hot summer months or unexpected heatwaves. Furthermore, schools lacking air conditioning altogether must be retrofitted with adequate cooling systems as soon as possible.

To support this petition's cause with accurate information:

1. According to studies conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), excessive heat can negatively impact students' cognitive abilities and overall academic performance.
2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that high temperatures can lead to dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and other health issues among individuals exposed for prolonged periods.
3. The National Education Association (NEA) recognizes the importance of maintaining comfortable classroom temperatures for optimal learning outcomes.

By signing this petition today, you are joining me in urging the Weber School District administration and local authorities to prioritize the installation or repair of air conditioning systems across all public schools within Roy immediately.

Our children deserve an environment where they can focus on their education without enduring unnecessary discomfort or health risks caused by extreme heat. Let us come together as a community and ensure that our schools provide a safe, comfortable, and conducive atmosphere for learning.

Together, we can make a difference and create lasting change for the benefit of our children's education and well-being. Sign this petition now to demand accessible and effective air conditioning in all public schools within Roy, Utah!

Thank you for your support!
