Convince Warner Bros. Discovery to revive The WB

Convince Warner Bros. Discovery to revive The WB
The Issue
To: Warner Bros. Discovery Executives, Nexstar Media Group, and Paramount Skydance.
We are calling for a seismic shift in the television landscape. It is time to abandon the failed experiments of the past and return to the magic that built a legacy. We demand that Warner Bros. Discovery and Nexstar Media Group restructure their partnership to revive The WB.
On September 15th and 17th, 2006, fans of television networks The WB and the United Paramount Network (UPN) bid farewell to a cherished era in broadcasting as these networks ceased to exist, merging into The CW on September 18th, 2006. For many, this merger symbolized the end of a beloved chapter of television that had brought a unique blend of programming and cultural diversity to our screens. It signified the loss of distinct identities that once resonated with millions. The recent passing of Jamie Kellner, the founder of The WB, on June 21, 2024, adds a poignant note to this historical narrative, as we remember his contributions to the television industry and mourn the loss of a visionary.
In 2022, Nexstar Media Group acquired The CW, a move that opened new avenues for potential restructuring in the entertainment landscape. This juncture presents an opportunity to revisit the merger decision and potentially restore The WB and UPN to their original glory, allowing these networks to once again flourish independently. Such a move could breathe new life into creative content, satisfy nostalgic cravings, and deliver programming that serves diverse audiences.
The WB was known for its innovative series that often gravitated toward teen and family-oriented dramas, while UPN carved a niche for itself with a mix of urban sitcoms and drama series, appealing to a broad demographic. Re-establishing these networks would not only honor the legacy of Jamie Kellner and the unique place The WB and UPN held in television history but also offer current and future audiences a richer variety of content.
Warner Bros. Discovery will own it's 75% stake of The WB, with Nexstar Media Group owning the network with it's 25% stake. Nexstar Media Group will divest it's 81% stake of The CW, making Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery 50-50 partners in the joint venture.
Through reviving The WB (with The CW's 2024 Rebrand and Graphics), but keeping The CW (by bringing back it's previous logo and it's 2021-24 rebrand), financial and creative investments can focus on niche market segments, tapping into the nostalgia of past audiences and the curiosity of new ones. This restructuring could enhance viewer engagement and loyalty, driving both viewer ratings and advertising revenue streams.
Reviving The WB is not just about nostalgia; it is a strategic business opportunity for Warner Bros. Discovery. With the current television landscape shifting, a revived The WB will soon join CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX as one of the expanded 'Big Five' networks, re-establishing WB's dominance in youth-oriented and genre programming.
We are calling on Warner Bros. Discovery to revive The WB network and specifically empower Warner Bros. Television to greenlight new, hit-driven drama and comedy shows that reflect the iconic, teen-targeted, and heart-felt programming that made the original network beloved. It is time to bring back high-quality storytelling that caters to the young adult audience through WB TV’s vast library and creative talent.
Our Proposal for a New Era:
- WBD Takes the Helm: Warner Bros. Discovery will take control, owning 75% of The WB, bringing back the curation, quality, and spirit of the original network.
- Strategic Partnership: Nexstar Media Group will own the remaining 25% stake, utilizing their massive local station footprint to ensure nationwide coverage.
- CW Divestment: Nexstar Media Group will divest its 81% stake of The CW, paving the way for Paramount/Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery to become 50-50 partners in a restructured venture.
Why Revive The WB?
We do not need UPN, and we do not need the current CW formula. We still have CBS as a major broadcast network and Paramount Network as a robust cable channel. What is missing is the "Frog" era magic—the teen dramas, the supernatural hits, and the WB animation studio spirit.
The Goal: Revive The WB and Greenlight New Hits!
- Demand: Direct Warner Bros. Discovery to revive The WB as a cable network or top-tier streaming hub.
- Production: Mandate that Warner Bros. Television Studios produces original drama and comedy content dedicated to this network.
- Content: Focus on developing 5-10 new flagship dramas and comedies within the first year, focusing on the quality-driven style of the 1990s/2000s WB era.
We are calling on Warner Bros. Discovery leadership to revive the iconic The WB Network. We need a broadcast home that brings back the magic of quality children’s programming, top-tier animation, and appointment television.
We propose the following structure for the revived WB Network:
- The Revived Kids' WB! Block: Bring back the iconic Kids' WB! brand to operate Weekday mornings (7:00–8:00 a.m. ET) featuring Cartoonito shows for preschoolers, and Weekday afternoons (3:00–5:00 p.m. ET) and Saturday mornings (8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. ET) featuring Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network hits.
- TNT Sports on The WB: Integrate TNT Sports across The WB, transforming it into a major sports broadcasting hub. Following the rebranding of TruTV into a dedicated sports destination at 6:00 PM ET, The WB will serve as a free-to-air home for marquee WBD sports events (along with TNT and TBS).
- CNN on The WB: Establish a dedicated CNN news division for The WB, providing trusted daily news broadcasts to a broader, traditional broadcast audience.
- Reviving The WB 100+: We propose that Warner Bros. Discovery revives The WB 100+ Station Group to serve as a specialized national television feed and programming service, targeting smaller American television markets (ranked #100 and above). The WB 100+ will provide a 24/7 schedule featuring:
- WB Primetime Shows: Reviving beloved hits.
- CW Late-Night Content: Fulfilling programming needs.
- Educational Programming & Syndication: High-quality content delivered via digital subchannels and cable.
The following stations are positioned to make this change:
We urge stations currently in transition, including WPIX (New York), KTLA (Los Angeles), WGN-TV (Chicago), KRON-TV (San Francisco), KAUT-TV (Oklahoma City), WPHL-TV (Philadelphia), KTTU-TV (Tucson), WTTA (Tampa), WPCH-TV (Atlanta), KQCA (Sacramento), KWGN-TV (Denver), WBKI (Louisville), WNOL-TV (New Orleans), WOTV-DT2 (Battle Creek), WNLO (Buffalo), WMYT-TV (Charlotte), WPNT (Pittsburgh), KUCW (Salt Lake City), WVBT-DT2 (Norfolk), KUNS-TV (Seattle), and other stations to drop the rebranded CW content and become anchor stations for a revived "WB" featuring original scripted dramas, sitcoms, news and sports.

The time is ripe for Warner Bros. Discovery and Nexstar Media Group to consider the historical significance and future potential of reviving The WB. By doing so, these media giants can show a commitment to diverse programming and community engagement, fostering stronger connections with viewers of all ages.
By moving to a 75/25 split with Warner Bros. Discovery in the driver's seat, we can create a network that is both financially profitable and beloved by fans.
We urge all stakeholders and decision-makers to reflect on this opportunity to honor the legacy of The WB while crafting a balanced, engaging television future. Please join me in signing this petition to advocate for the return of The WB, and let’s make television history together!
Sign this petition to tell David Zaslav and Perry Sook that it is time to bring back The WB!
To take further action, please email and tell them directly that we demand to know the progress made toward this commitment.
